- Finally, we were assigned to wrtie a sample interview/survey with 7-10 questions

SCRIBE NOTES: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, 2008

Okay. So if you weren't on class on Wednesday, I'd first like to say "Shame on you" and I not going to explain every last thing to the best detail. However, I think it's good that you came to this wiki to catch up on the basics. So, here's a very concise summary of what happened:
  • we discussed the differences between reports and research papers.
  • we discussed the differences between persuasive research papers and analytical research papers
  • we had lit circle meetings
  • we wrote book evaluations and grade suggestions
  • we wrote novel reflections based on different prompts (deriving from Irish Proverbs or C.S. Lewis)
  • we went to the library to borrow A Separate Peace, our next class reading book

Homework included reading 40 pages of A Separate Peace, writing vocabulary sentences for newly received vocabulary words, and completing Lit-Circle creative projects. Overall, a very eventful day. Next up, presenting projects and extremely good videos. That's it for now, until next time,
Peace out.

Monday - 3/31/2008

  1. We started off class by turning in our found poems, however only about half of the class actually remembered that they were due.
  2. We took a survey about what we wanted to read next, and the topic of our research paper. Ms. Wray decided that we would read A Separate Piece in Lit Circles and as a class. Also, our research papers will be on a social issues that affects the world, our nation, or as local as our community or school.
  3. Some groups got into their Lit Circles and discussed their novels, however most groups were already done and continued to work on their projects.
  4. As class finished up, we made a list of social issues that we might do our paper on such as global warming, lack of oil, lack of diversity in Lake Oswego, pollution, immigration, etc. (The topics which can be covered are very broad.)
*Homework: Complete all role sheets, finish the Lit Circle project, complete the social issue hand out about the topic we will do our research paper on, and do the found poem if you forgot over spring break.
3/14/2008
We started off with the new schedule that we have. We now have an extra meeting time with our groups.

Then the groups met for 35 minutes which ended up to be about 45 minutes. This was very helpfull to my group.

After that 3 groups went out in the hall to get a head start on reading (30 minutes)

Then we came back inside and did a quick journal and rated everyone in our group on how they are participating.

We then went over fragments and run-ons

Homework- Reading/role sheets and run-on and fragment worksheet

2/27/08

Asked class on whether anyone missed quiz

Talk about long scene, act 4, scene 3

- Basically, Macduff Finds Malcom at the English court and urges him to attack Macbeth. Even though Malcolm suspects Macduff of working for Macbeth and get himself killed, two factor revealed Macduff of being honorable; Ross came a told Macduff that his family was slaughtered, showing Macduff’s true feelings, and Malcolm tests Macduff of his royalty, but mainly the first. Macduff then turns his grief into vengeance and, thus, leads him to helping Malcolm in attacking Macbeth with Siward and ten thousand troops.

Afterwords, we then studied our vocab for a portion of the period. I found it helpful, especially for students who have not studied at all with their own time.

While studying, Ms.Wray handed back papers, from notes to roll assignments to various other assignments

We first hit on a summery, listed above, in a semcratic seminar, about act 4 scene 3. Then we get in depth on Malcolm’s confessed vices, Macduffs feelings of lost, and sleepwalking problems of Lady Macbeth.

1/31/08's Scribing Facts
We started out with a so called "Roll Assignment", that had never before been referred to with that title. After a few minutes of mass confusion, Ms. Wray finally realized that none of us knew what she was talking about and explained that it was the paper that we had been using to write imagistic sentences on. Today we used it to analyze a sentence explaining how Art is an antidote for the numbness we come across in our lives, then wrote our own sentences using medical terms to describe art. I still don't get what this has to do with any sort of "Roll". Rick Roll maybe?

After we turned those in, we proceeded to act out completely random sentences about actions performed by completely random people, creatures, and inanimate objects. Whether it was frozen milk coming home in a pail, or drowning a saw, the writer of this poem seemed to have no control over what he decided to include.

Shortly after this strange act concluded, Ms. Wray explained to us how our new class Wiki would work, and that eventually lead us here. From the getgo, I was pretty sure there would be a multitude of random pictures and exclamations about random Google searches. Lo and behold, from the moment we stepped in the lab, chaos insued. Just look at the posts.

*EDIT* I am now out of English Class, and nothing significant happened. Sorry to crush your hopes, but we just got to look at our grades. Which I might add were quite impressive in some cases.

*2/4/2008 Period B1 *

After roll was taken and we were all seated, we started off class with yet another Roll Assignment. This one was about a section from "Sailing to Byzantium," by W.B. Yeats.

Right after that Roll Assignment, we went over the Iambic Pentameter learning about the different patterns.

Like last class, we were formed into groups and given 4 lines to act out without words. It was quite entertaining! haha

After we all laughed at our acting, we went to the library to check out Macbeth.

Once we all were back and seated, with 30 minutes left, we read the plot summary of Macbeth, which Ms Wray passed out to all of us. This prettttttty much gave away the book. But totally will make it better to understand when reading it.

We opened Macbeth to page 3 and reviewed the characters. Then read Act 1 out loud. Act 1 was about 13 lines long. Not long at all!!

We ended class just beginning Act 2.

For homework we have to read Act 2 and respond to 7 questions that were passed out.
:]

¿~+*2.8.08 B1*+~¿

Its finally Friday.

As I have found, people stuggle to be productive in first period and nothing changed today. As I am looking around, I see the blank stares of tired teens.

We dove right into Macbeth this morning with another roll assignment. We had to "choose three lines that show appearance vs. reality." After, we discussed why Lady Macbeth was a "bitch." We continued describing other ambitious people and the problems women face around being driven business people.

Somehow we started talking about guys/girls crying and talking about emotions. I kinda forgot how we got there but I think it had something to do with Hillary Clinton. Shortly after, Taylor and Ryan started arguing about what they have done with girls? :\

Oh ya, we started reading Act I.7

It was one of the most interesting English classes of the year so far...

2.12.2008 (Tuesday)
We started off class with Ms. Wray apologizing for her discussion from last week in which we used the word "bitch". Apparently, someone had found it offensive, and misunderstood the intent of her discussion.

Then she collected the 35 vocabulary sentences with alternate forms that we had done as homework, and stamped our Macbeth reading journal.

Next, we got into groups of four and had a discussion of the Macbeth reading homework. We analyzed lines and word choices. One person had to take notes on questions Ms. Wray provided.

Then we reiterated what had been said in the small groups as a whole class.

We continued with Macbeth by reading and talking about Act 2 Scene 3.

We tried to form tableaux after a rushed explanation, and didn't do so well.

Our homework for next class is:
  • Read Act 2 Scene 4
  • Complete Macbeth reading journal for 2.3 and 2.4
  • do a one page (handwritten, or 1/2 page typed) diary entry as any character, using a minimum of 5 vocabulary words.
